Okotoks is looking for a new artist in residence.

The third annual Sheep River Artist in Residence program is accepting applications until May 19.

The four-week residency in September offers an opportunity for an artist to develop their work while engaging with the community during Alberta Culture Days and Month of the Artist.

For the first two weeks of the residency, the artist will work in the small gallery space at the Okotoks Art Gallery, while the second half of the residency will be at a yet to be determined space hosted by the Town of Okotoks.

The artist is required to be in residence for at least six hours per day, five days a week, during the month of September.

Both workspaces will be accessible to the public, so it is common for people to watch the artist work and ask questions.

The Okotoks Arts Council, Okotoks Public Library and the Town of Okotoks launched the inaugural Sheep River Artist in Residence in the spring of 2023. The program was developed to support and encourage established or emerging artists, while enriching the community with art.

Tanya Zakarow, who was selected as the inaugural artist in residence in 2023, created a series of portraits of prominent community members during her term.

Last year’s artist in residence, Wanru Kemp, developed a series of artworks that reflect the unique landscapes, while capturing the expressive nature of the area and fostering an appreciation for the natural world and its soothing presence.
