LAKELAND - From Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, Alberta RCMP focused on traffic safety enforcement across the province, which resulted in nearly 2,000 traffic safety infractions.

A total of 1,982 tickets were issued. Of those tickets, 990 were for speeding, 35 were for distracted driving, and 55 were issued for not wearing a seat belt, according to information from RCMP.

Ninety-two drug or alcohol impaired drivers were also removed from Alberta roads.

"Alberta RCMP wants to remind everyone that there is no reason to get behind the wheel if you are impaired," reads information from RCMP.

“Most traffic-related tragedies are avoidable, and we are reminded of this every long weekend. We want everyone to get home safely. Avoiding distracted and impaired driving goes a long way to making that happen,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic.

Police encourage motorists to give themselves enough time to get to where they are going, and delay travel if roads are unfavourable.
