Former world champion curler David Murdoch blasts the horn to send runners on their way in the Okotoks Terry Fox Run on Sept. 15 in Sheep River Park.

More than 100 participants took part in the Okotoks Terry Fox Run on Sept. 15 as part of a global effort to raise money for cancer research.

This year’s run has raised $13,000 to date, which far exceeds previous editions in Okotoks that averaged roughly $4,000 per year.

This year’s run was moved to Sheep River Park where participants had a choice of three routes ranging from 1.5 to 5 kilometres.

Former world champion curler David Murdoch, who is now an Okotoks resident, acted as the celebrity starter.

Organizer Steve Preece said many community businesses contributed food, beverages and supplies so that virtually all the money raised will go to funding cancer research.

Fountain Tire, Sobey’s, Save-on-Foods, Cresco Wealth Management, The Eagle 100.9, parkrun, Western Wheel, Motion Fitness and the Town of Okotoks all provided support.

Leftover food and beverages were donated to the Okotoks Food Bank.

The annual run in support of Terry Fox’s dream, which is held in over 600 Canadian communities and has raised over $850 million for cancer research, will celebrate its 45th anniversary next year.

Preece said people can still donate at www.terryfox.org.
