A learning partnership between Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools and a Métis educational institute is bringing Indigenous history and culture into schools.

Christ the Redeemer (CTR) teamed up with Rupertsland Institute to strengthen Indigenous education as part of its current learning plan.

The institute, an affiliate of the Métis Nation of Alberta, offers education, training and research to promote well-being of Métis people in Alberta.

Jacealyn Hempel, director of learning at CTR Catholic, said there is a significant Indigenous population among students, and over half identify as Métis.

"(The partnership) ensures every child feels seen, supported and connected to their heritage,” Hempel said. “It helps kids make connections with their own heritage, to help them stand taller in who they are.”

Métis culture, music and traditions will be introduced to students from kindergarten to Grade 12, and non-Indigenous students will be encouraged to think about their own backgrounds.

“They can see themselves in the learning, they can relate it to their own cultural stories, their own cultural heritage,” Hempel said.

The collaboration recognizes reconciliation and cultural awareness, creating learning opportunities for students and teachers.

Students will hear stories from knowledge keepers, listen to musicians or watch dancers in addition to classroom learning, and teachers will have opportunities for professional development and access to other learning resources.

“There's lots of potential and opportunity,” Hempel said. “It’s aiming to enrich the educational experience for all students.”

CTR has schools in High River, Okotoks, Canmore and other municipalities in southern Alberta.
