We have a winner in this year's Western Wheel Cares 50/50 raffle.
Bill Christensen of Diamond Valley took home $4,480 from the draw, which is part of the annual Western Wheel Cares campaign to support seven local charities.
The lucky ticket was #3694896 and it was one of 2,196 tickets sold during the campaign.
Christensen said he didn’t expect to win and has no big plans for his winnings.
“You buy these tickets because you want to help the community, not really believing that you’re ever going to win,” he said.
“We’re probably going to invest a lot of it back into the community.”
Christensen has lived in southern Alberta for a long time but only moved to Diamond Valley recently.
“We’re in a really nice community,” he said. “We’ve made all kinds of friends already.”
Seven local organizations are supported through Western Wheel Cares: Foothills Advocacy in Motion Society, Foothills Country Hospice, Inclusion Foothills, Okotoks Food Bank, Pound Rescue, Rowan House Society and Sheep River Health Trust.
This year’s campaign runs until Dec. 31 and 100 per cent of donations go to the seven charities.
In 2023, Western Wheel Cares raised a record $100,002 to bring its 12-year total to $669,061.
Tickets for the 50/50 draw were sold by volunteers in the community and at Christmas markets organized by Okotoks MarketSquare.
