An idling vehicle in Okotoks on Feb. 3. RCMP is kicking off Operation Cold Start in an effort to reduce vehicle thefts in the winter months.

Police want to put a stop to the theft of vehicles left running in cold weather.

Okotoks RCMP are launching Operation Cold Start to remind drivers that vehicles that are running, unlocked and unattended are easy targets for thieves.

Four idling vehicles were stolen last year in Okotoks, police said. Beyond the hassle to drivers, stolen vehicles can pose additional public safety risks if they are used in other crimes or sold to unsuspecting buyers.

In Okotoks, Operation Cold Start runs from Jan. 20 to 24. Police officers will seek out idling vehicles to see if they are locked and will educate drivers about how to protect their property.

As part of the program, RCMP have tips to help people safeguard their vehicles:

  • Park in a visible, well-lit area if a garage or driveway is unavailable.
  • Use visible anti-theft devices, such as steering wheel locks, to deter thieves.
  • Consider installing an automatic car starter to safely warm your vehicle.
  • Never leave your vehicle unattended with the keys inside.
  • Always lock your vehicle, even when parked in a driveway or garage.
  • Avoid leaving valuables like wallets, purses or spare keys visible in your vehicle.
  • Most modern vehicles don’t require a long warm-up period; if warming up is necessary, stay with your vehicle.
