GALLERY: Okotoks celebrates culture at Canada Day event

The community came together to celebrate Canada and culture on July 1.

Cultural diversity was on display at the Town of Okotoks' Canada Day celebration on July 1.

The event, held in the Okotoks Recreation Centre's Murray Arena after being moved indoors due to poor weather, featured a drum circle, Filipino performances of Tinikling and Mahrlika, and more festivities.

"Canada is a mosaic of cultures, languages, and traditions," said Okotoks Mayor Tanya Thorn in a speech during the event. "From the Indigenous people who have called this land home for thousands of years, to the waves of immigrants who have enriched our society, our strength lies in our ability to embrace and celebrate our differences.

"Whether your family has been here for generations, or you're a new Canadian, each of us brings something unique to the fabric of our nation."

Foothills Community Immigrant Services hosted a multicultural showcase of food from various cultures including India, China, Ukraine, the Phillipines and more.
