A High River councillor announced her resignation this week.

First-term councillor Kelly Smit resigned during the Town’s regular council meeting on Jan. 27, the Town said in a media release.

The resignation took effect immediately. Smit said she is moving to B.C. with her family.

“There have been some incredible moments as a member of council, and many learning experiences as well,” Smit said.

“No one can fully prepare you for the highs and lows that come with putting yourself out there as a member of council.”

The Town said Smit’s leadership and contributions made a lasting impact in the community.

She played a key role in guiding High River through the COVID-19 pandemic and spearheaded community engagement activities, such as Coffee with Council and others, that grew relationships between residents and council, the Town said.

“I’m deeply grateful for the life-enriching moments I’ve experienced as part of this Council and this amazing community,” Smit said.

“Our collective mandate has always been to serve this town responsibly — spending wisely, building thoughtfully and creating a community that others admire,” she said.

Smit’s departure leaves a vacancy on council, but no byelection will be held due to the upcoming municipal election in October.
