Mighty Knights stumble against rival Canmore in final

Canmore Collegiate Wolverines take Foothills Soccer League banner 4-1 over HTA.

The Holy Trinity Knights faltered on the home stretch against their rival Canmore.

Taking to the pitch for the Foothills Soccer League Championship match at Bill Robertson Park on Oct. 11, the Knights’ fierce advances and dominating possession were parried by the Canmore Collegiate Wolverines, who netted a 4-1 win over HTA.

“Some days things just aren’t clicking, and today was one of those days,” said Knights head coach Nathan Len. “All season long we’ve been fortunate, been hitting the net like crazy, and today, it wasn’t one part of the pitch, just everything kind of fell flat.

“Everyone’s entitled to have an off day; unfortunately today was ours.”

The take-home, Len said, is the team needs to be prepared for a fight after smooth sailing most of the season.

“For the first time this season here’s a little bit of adversity that we need to come back from,” he said.

“It’s tough preparing for competitive matches when you’re on the other end of a lop-sided win. Essentially let’s go back, let’s regroup, and try to figure out how to come back stronger Friday up in Cochrane.”

For Knight Lainey Fischer, who spearheaded many a charge on the Wolverines’ net, the cohesion was a wake-up call for her and her teammates after an undefeated season and two wins over the Wolverines twice, with a 9-0 margin.

“We had trouble connecting as a team, and we didn’t do as well as we normally did, but I think the other team just brought a lot today,” Fischer said. “We weren’t really expecting it because we’ve been doing so good this season.

“Don’t underestimate people, always keep trying, you can’t just take something for granted.”

Heading to Zones this weekend in Cochrane, the Knights will get a chance to take on Canmore again Saturday.
