The hockey rink at St. John Paul II Collegiate in Okotoks on Nov. 17. Finishing touches are being put on the rink, and then it will be up to Mother Nature, with the Town hoping to have ice ready by mid-to-late December.

Finishing touches are being put on a new outdoor hockey rink in Okotoks, and then all that's needed will be some winter weather to help form a smooth, icy surface.

The Town said it hopes the ice surface will be ready at the rink, on Cimarron Drive at St. John Paul II Collegiate, by mid-to-late December.

Chain-link fencing and netting will be installed, and some finishing touches made, before the rink is open to be used for things like ball hockey, the Town said.

Until all of the work is completed, the construction fence will stay up around the rink.

The rink features lights, accessible viewing options and barrier-free access.

It will be flooded for hockey during winter and will have four basketball nets for use in the summer months, and a smooth surface for a variety of other activities.

Current weather forecasts from Environment Canada call for colder temperatures to arrive next week.
