New, re-designed signage reflecting the Town of Okotoks’ updated boundaries has started to be installed.

The idea of new gateway signage has been discussed in the capital budget for over a decade, according to town engineering technologist Mitchell Kowalski.

Two full-sized signs and a smaller breakaway sign will be decorated with a blue wave, similar to the Town’s logo, and be illuminated at night through solar power and batteries.

“The design will reflect Okotoks’ character and identity while creating a positive first impression of the community,” Kowalski said.

The first sign was installed on Dec. 2 at Highway 2A north of 338 Avenue. There will be two on Highway 7, on the west and east sides of town, and a smaller sign on 338 Avenue near Highway 2, Kowalski said.

Apart from updating the colours and material of the signs to better reflect the town’s identity, one of the main objectives of the project was to accurately reflect new boundaries following the 2017 annexation.

The other two gateway signs are expected to be installed in the next few weeks or early next year, depending on the weather. The smaller sign and solar components will be installed in a time best suited to seasonal efficiency.

The project is set to be fully completed by the summer of next year.
