Okotokians recognized with awards from the Legion

Awards and certificates were handed out to deserving individuals at the Elks Hall in Okotoks on Sept. 12.

A longtime Legion member and some deserving civilians were recognized recently by the Okotoks Legion.

Malcolm Hughes, president of the Okotoks branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, presented four awards at the Elks Hall on Sept. 12.

Robert (Bob) McLeod received a Legion Life Membership for his leadership and commitment to the Legion since the Okotoks branch was formed in 2014.

McLeod is a charter member of the branch and has served as president in seven of the 10 years since it was founded.

The Legion’s National Command Council bestowed the honour in recognition of McLeod’s personal strengths and leadership.

Kathy Coutts and Allan Boss received Legion Friendship Awards for supporting the Legion’s commitment to “Always Remember.”

Boss, the culture and heritage services team lead for the Town of Okotoks, transformed a retaining wall on Veterans Way into a unique tribute to the men and women from Okotoks and area who served their country during peace and war.

Coutts, in her capacity as a museum specialist at the Town of Okotoks, carried out painstaking research to ensure information on the Veterans Way memorial wall was accurate.

She also contributed many hours locating information for memorial banners that are displayed on Veterans Way and Milligan Drive during the annual Remembrance period.

Both of the Friendship Awards were approved higher up in the Legion’s structure.

Nancy and Wally Tonn received a certificate from the Rolling Barrage for the tremendous work the couple put in with regards to organizing a reception for the riders in Okotoks on Aug. 16.

The Rolling Barrage is a cross-country motorcycle ride to raise awareness about PTSD among members of the Canadian Armed Forces, veterans and first responders.
