'Tis the season to give.
Okotoks RCMP and Okotoks Municipal Enforcement are looking to 'cram-a-cruiser' full of non-perishable food items during Light Up Okotoks on Nov. 19.
Cst. Candace Harris with the Okotoks RCMP said officers are looking forward to seeing how many police cruisers they can fill to deliver to the Okotoks Food Bank.
"It's a fun way for the community to get involved and for us to have that community engagement, where we haven't been been able to over the last 18 months because of COVID," she said, adding that this is also a chance for community members to interact with officers and introduce new members of the force.
Patrons are encouraged to bring items that will be donated to the non-perishable items including canned fruit, jams, boxed macaroni and cheese, laundry detergent, baby food, peanut butter, cereal and canned soup are staples on the shelves at the food bank.
"We're going to have two cars – we'll have the Okotoks Municipal Enforcement vehicle and an RCMP vehicle, so the goal will be to cram each of those full," Harris said. "In the event that those get full, we can grab another car and see how many we can do.
"Hopefully this will turn into an annual event in partnership with Light Up and the food bank and give us some space for other community organizations to get involved next year."
The RCMP and OME will be set up from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the 19th, outside of the old Christ the Redeemer School Division office on the south side of McRae Avenue to collect donations.
"We just want to remind people that if they're coming down anyways to bring any sort-of items because the food bank is looking for all different types of things," she said.
