The Friends of St. Mary’s School Okotoks Association is planning to break ground on an inclusive, accessible playground structure on the grounds of the elementary school next July after nearly five years of fundraising.
The new playground is being built to support those with mobility challenges and promote inclusive play.
“This new playground is a testament to the power of community and our commitment to inclusivity. We are thrilled to create a space where all children can play together and feel a true sense of belonging,” said St. Mary’s School principal Shari Gustafson.
“This project is deeply rooted in the Catholic Social Teaching of Human Dignity, reminding us that every child is a cherished individual, deserving of respect, love, and the opportunity to thrive in an environment that honours their inherent worth."
There are two playground structures at the school on Cimarron Trail, but children with mobility challenges are unable to play with their friends as the equipment is not wide enough and the grounds are not conducive for walkers or wheelchairs.
Friends of St. Mary’s School Okotoks Association chair Krista Conrad said the new playground will include a rubber surface and wide ramps as well as play components and activity panels for children of all ages and abilities.
“The playground will also be easily accessible to the general public, as it will be adjacent to the school parking lot,” Conrad said.
The society began fundraising for a playground in 2020 under the umbrella of St. Mary’s School Parent Council and to-date has raised just over $115,000. It is now seeking the support of Okotoks community groups, businesses and residents as it works toward its fundraising goal of $250,000.
“This has been a grassroots endeavour from the beginning with parents at the helm and input from the school and school board but no funding support aside from promotion of fundraising activity,” said Conrad.
The society has applied for government grants and received a letter of support from the Town of Okotoks, which emphasizes the importance of an inclusive and accessible playground in the Cimarron neighbourhood, not only for the students of St. Mary’s School but for all residents.
At this time, the Friends of St. Mary’s is looking for sponsorship to reach its playground funding goal. A comprehensive sponsorship package is available, which details perks of donating, including opportunities for logos or names on permanent playground signage, naming of playground ramps and other avenues of community recognition.
Additionally, the society has announced a Buy a Tile campaign to recognize donations up to $2,500. Any individual, family, organization or business will be recognized on a fixed sign with a tile that may include a family, child or business/organization name.
To-date, donations have been received from the Foothills Kinette Club and St. Mary’s School parents, and the society hopes to generate more community support to complete the valuable project.
