Late Okotoks Mayor Bill Robertson asks kids to come throw the switch and light the community Christmas tree at the 2018 Light Up Okotoks.

One lucky Okotoks youngster will get the one-of-a-kind chance to flip the switch to light up the Christmas tree at this year's Light Up Okotoks, thanks to a fundraiser by the Sheep River Health Trust.

"It's just such a good opportunity to raise funds for the trust and also provide a child with a magical experience," said fund development and communications co-ordinator Shanon Maksymich.

The Festive and Bright Experience is an online draw which allows adults to purchase raffle tickets on behalf of minors. The winner will have the honour of turning on the tree lights during the 30th annual Light Up on Nov. 18.

Tickets go on sale Nov. 1, according to Maksymich, and will close at 4:59 p.m. on Nov. 18. They can be purchased at rafflebox.ca/raffle/festiveandbrightexperience.

Okotokians can buy one ticket for $5 or five tickets for $20.

The trust is also busy preparing to launch another popular fundraiser, the Avenue of Trees.

In its 10th year, the event sees 30 fully decorated Christmas trees displayed throughout the Best Western Plus Inn and Suites in Okotoks.

Families can peruse the trees from Nov. 19 to Dec. 14, for free, anytime the hotel is open to the public. Attendees are also welcome to vote for their favourites.

An online auction is held to accept bids for the trees, 10 of which are designated as Trees of Hope. Though these 10 are not available for bidding, they are graciously donated to families in need.

Businesses and residents are also able to fully sponsor a tree for $500 or, in a new addition this year, can give sponsorship in various monetary increments.

Bidding for the trees can be done here.
