There will be a homecoming on stage this weekend when an old face brings new songs to the Red Deer Lake Church.

Musician and minister Paul Rumbolt will be back in the Foothills Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. for a fundraising concert.

The former Turner Valley and Black Diamond United Church minister moved to Ontario two-and-a-half years ago.

Rumbolt has been back to southern Alberta for a couple gigs, but is looking forward to playing in his old stomping grounds for friendly faces.

“I will be familiar with all the people who show up, whether it's socially, through my music life or church life,” he said. “It's like going home for a visit.”

Rumbolt will be bringing back presents from the east – musical presents.

Although, he hasn't recorded any new albums since his 2008 album Songsmith, he will be performing new material Saturday.

“I will be performing all the songs from Songsmith and a couple of covers and a couple of originals I have recorded yet,” Rumbolt said.

Rumbolt pulls from a wide variety of genres, including folk, and is heavily influenced by his faith and his east coast story-telling roots.

He will be joined by Suzanne Levesque, who sang harmony on Songsmith, and her husband, multi instrumentalist, Craig Bignell.

All three have ties to the church they are fundraising for.

“I did a two-night release for (Songsmith) at Red Deer Lake Church,” he said. “I played with Craig at my last gig at Red Deer Lake in 2014. I did a full five-piece band and he did the percussion.”

The three also have ties off the stage. Rumbolt was one of two ministers who officiated at their wedding.

Levesque and Bignell will accompany Rumbolt and sings songs from their first CD Moondancer as the duet Over the Moon.

Bignell said they will soon be releasing the album in Canada. Moondancer, an American, folk-influenced 10-song album, has already been getting attention in Europe.

“We are getting big reviews in magazines and BBC radio is playing it,” he said.

A Russian reporter did a two part series on their album, he added, and is asking them to come play in St. Petersburg.

“It's wild,” Bignell says.
