LETTER: Okotoks taxpayers shouldn’t have expense of deer-proofing gardens

Suggestion to reimburse taxpayers for the cost of plants, clean-up and other damage by deer is a reasonable one.

Dear Editor,

Re: Town has obligation to address rising deer population, March 26

A letter to the editor was recently written regarding the increase in deer numbers. The writer addressed certain annoyances and as an Okotoks resident, I, too, am dealing with the same.

The writer's suggestions made to the Town of Okotoks if the concern is not dealt with are reasonable; for instance: reimbursing taxpayers for the cost of plants, clean-up and other damages.

The cost and work in preparing our gardens to enjoy are shattered by the destruction of plants and disease-ridden deer droppings clean-ups. We should not have to also spend extra money deer-proofing our gardens.

I am sure there are ways of containing the deer in a designated area especially as the town is growing and their safety should be a consideration.

Designated area? Like send them to deer camp?

Disease-ridden deer?! Which diseases are you referring to? Please provide source citations. Stop planting non-native plants that are attractants for the deer and try actually living in the suburban setting you chose to buy a home in that borders our breathtaking Alberta wilderness. The arrogance of this sort of human would be absolutely hilarious if it wasn't so galling and ultimately dangerous for our wildlife.

This topic is getting so tiresome 😴! If you can’t live in harmony with the local wildlife, then move to some large city centre. You are not the only species on this planet!!!

I really wish people did some research before moving to Okotoks. We have deer. We have a lot of different wildlife. Don't like it? Don't move here. Take your entitled selves back to the city and enjoy your crime and your city craziness. Leave us and the deer alone. What makes people think they get to move here and change the rules for those of us who enjoy the wildlife?

This was literally one of the bonuses in moving here!!

"Designated area"... I fredquently see groups of deer in the fields between Meadowridge School and Wedderburn. It's a great place for them, right they're not bothering anyone there! But soon, that entire area is going to be homes... with gardens and yards. Exactly where do you think deer should go then??? It's PEOPLE who keep infiltrating the wildlife areas, not the other way around. Don't want deer in your yard munching on your fallen apples? Don't plant apple trees.

There's only one disease around here... Move to downtown Calgary, whiner.

You do get kudos for having the nards to put such drivel into writing along with your name, that's for sure.
