Families should have no problem finding fun activities in Okotoks on the last day of the year.

The Town of Okotoks is hosting its Kids New Year’s Eve Party with activities ranging from swimming and skating to magic shows and cookie decorating at the Okotoks Recreation Centre on Dec. 31. Festivities run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“There’s lots of activities for families to do together,” said Jacquie Hill, co-ordinator of community programs. “It’s a great way to end the year.”

Opportunities to play in the water will be in abundance with a parent and tot swim at 9:30 a.m. for an hour, family aquafit from 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and public swim times from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Those who prefer to stay dry can enjoy some gym time and bouncy castles in the Shane Homes Gymnasium from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Arts and crafts and cookie decorating will take place in front of KC’s Eatery from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as a magician makes the rounds with half hour shows at both 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Also in the afternoon, families can lace up and cruise around the Murray Arena for family skating from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

All of the activities held throughout the day are free to the public.

“It’s a service to the community,” she said. “We want to make sure that it’s accessible for everyone.”

The day of family activities will end with a bang. A fireworks display will be set off in Lineham Park at 7 p.m.

Hill said the new year’s celebration has been taking place since 2010 with as many as 2,000 people participating throughout the day.

“This brings people together again for that community feel that Okotoks has,” she said. “It’s just offering things for families to do and bring families together.”
