Public hearing upcoming for industrial park north of High River

A development plan could pave the way for an industrial park that encompasses about 175 acres along Highway 2A.

A development plan could pave the way for an industrial park near High River.

The Wakeford Business Park Outline Plan encompasses about 175 acres along Highway 2A, directly north of 498 Avenue and the town of High River.

A public hearing for the plan is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18 during Foothills County’s council meeting. The outline plan would guide development of the business park, if it is approved.

Over half the land within the 175-acre area will be left as agricultural in the project's first phase. About 30 per cent would be a mix of commercial or industrial parcels, with the remainder developed as roadways or municipal reserve.

The plan calls for two new intersections on Highway 2A that a traffic impact assessment recommends have traffic signals.

The assessment found the development would generate 660 trips in the morning peak hour and 613 in the afternoon peak hour.

A potential concept for future development is included in the planning document that shows how development could be extended onto adjacent lands, with business lots taking up the remaining agricultural land and extending further to the east.

Additional development would require a new outline plan with additional land use amendments and subdivision applications.
