The second annual Okotoks Cornhole Classic will take place at the Arts & Learning Campus Plaza on the Canada Day weekend.

As many as 70 teams are expected to do battle when the second instalment of the Okotoks Cornhole Classic takes place later this month.

Trevor Wheaton and friend Shane Evong are organizing the event that will take place on Saturday, June 29 at the Arts & Learning Campus Plaza and will once again act as a fundraiser for the Okotoks Food Bank.

The inaugural event last year was held on Canada Day and saw 54 two-person teams take part, raising $3,500 for the food bank.

Wheaton said they’re looking to increase both totals, although he’s hoping to cap the tourney at 70 teams.

“We can accommodate more teams, but it just means building a few more sets of boards and we were trying to avoid that,” he said. “I built 15 sets of boards last year and I’ve still got the calluses from it.”

Strictly recreational, the tournament will see teams play a round robin format before breaking into two playoff brackets where prizes will go to the top finishers.

Wheaton said the reception the first event received coupled with the financial support it was able to provide to the food bank meant turning it into an annual affair was an easy decision.

“It was a lot of work, but at the same time, it really struck us because, in talking with the food bank, you realize their coffers are at an all-time low at this time of year, so it hits at a good time to help support them,” he said.

The tournament will feature hourly door prizes, a Hub Town beer tent and food trucks. Wheaton is also hoping to line up some live music.

There’s a $40 entry fee and teams can register via [email protected] or on the Okotoks Cornhole Classic Facebook page

Wheaton said there are also sponsorship opportunities for local businesses that want to get involved.
