Remembrance Day services in the Foothills region will honour those who served in uniform.

In Okotoks, a Remembrance Day service will be held at the Viking Rentals Centre on Nov. 11

The service is hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion Okotoks Branch #291 and is supported by the Town of Okotoks. Doors open at 9 a.m. and the service starts at 10:20 a.m.

Okotoks Legion president Rick Oncescu said the Legion appreciates the community’s support during and leading up to Remembrance Day.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force and the force will be recognized during the service, Oncescu said.

During the Second World War, the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan saw nearly 200 training and support facilities built for air force personnel in Canada, including training schools in DeWinton and High River.

“In our area, there was a large presence leading up to and during the Second World War, in military training,” Oncescu said.

Britons, Australians and New Zealanders learned, alongside Canadians, how to fly in battle, he said.

More than 131,000 aircrew were trained in Canada under the plan.

An outdoor ceremony will also be held at the Okotoks Cenotaph from 10:20 a.m. to noon.

In Diamond Valley, a Remembrance Day service at Oilfields School starts at 10:30 a.m. and people are asked to be seated about 15 minutes before it begins.

Following the service, attendees are invited to the Turner Valley Legion starting at 11:30 a.m.
