A staff member testing positive for COVID-19 has resulted in the postponement of today's first day of classes at Meadow Ridge School.

"Alberta Health Services has been involved right from the get-go," said Larry Albrecht, Foothills School Division chair."The school was thoroughly cleaned last evening (Aug. 31). We're following all the protocols that are in place. Things are still on track.".

The staff member who tested positive was last at Meadow Ridge School, a K to Grade 9 school, on Friday at noon.

The decision to close the school was made by the division's executive team working closely with Alberta Health Services. Notices were sent out to parents and guardians of students on Monday.

"While Alberta Health Services has indicated the school is safe to remain open, due to the late hour and to allow Public Health time to complete their contact tracing, we are delaying the start of school for some Meadow Ridge families," a division release to parents stated.

Meadow Ridge School was scheduled to open with a staggered start with a portion of the students attending today. Those students will be notified as to when their first day of school will be.

The school will be open today for staff. The Foothills School Division executive is meeting with staff this morning.

Meadow Ridge is expected to open for students on Wednesday, Albrecht said.

The school, like all schools in Alberta, was closed to in-class learning in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
