Work is underway on a long-awaited outdoor sports rink in Okotoks.
The multi-use, all-season rink is being built by the Town at St. John Paul II Collegiate on Cimarron Drive, and it should be ready well before hockey season.
Completion of the project is scheduled for mid- to late September.
Information from the Town says the rink will be flooded for hockey in the winter and will have four basketball nets and a smooth surface for a variety of other activities in the warmer months.
The Town originally budgeted $500,000 for the project, but the price tag doubled to $1 million based on bids the Town received for the work, prompting Okotoks council to increase the project's budget in April.
Originally proposed in 2021, completion of the rink was expected in the winter of 2022, but the Town previously said it was delayed for several reasons, including design work and planning between the Town and school board.
