Year In Review — Okotoks entertainment district shelved in May

Even a watered down version of an entertainment district in Olde Towne Okotoks was defeated by Okotoks council.
  • Candidates for election in the Highwood riding took part in an election forum on May 17 at the Okotoks Evangelical Free Church. Jessica Hallam, running for the NDP, and Mike Lorusso, with the Wildrose Independence Party, faced off alongside incumbent UCP candidate RJ Sigurdson. 

  • Opposition began to brew from within the business community to a proposal to create an entertainment district to allow alcohol consumption seven days a week along a stretch of Olde Towne Okotoks.  

  • Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools (CTR) named Andrea Holowka as new superintendent to replace the retiring Dr. Scott Morrison. 

  • The operator of an e-scooter business spoke out about rising levels of vandalism to the machines in Okotoks and said he was frustrated by the increased amount of damage. 

  • Rowan House Society, an organization that provides support and education related to domestic violence re-opened an office in Okotoks after pandemic restrictions made it hard to operate face-to-face. 

  • The Town of Diamond Valley unveiled a new logo that the Town said pays homage to the area's roots, values and small-town charm. 

  • Four gymnasts earned perfect scores in the 21st annual Mountain Magic Invitational in front of a home-town crowd at the Murray Areana. Gymnasts Reese Fischer, Reese Harris, Alexis Scherwitz and Alli Christie scored perfect 10’s during the event. 

  • Okotoks skater Peyton Krebs was named to Team Canada’s roster for the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship, played in Finland and Lativia from May 12-28. 

  • The Foothills Eagles kicked off their inaugural regular season in the U18 Female Tackle Football League and took on the Calgary Wildcats in their first game. The Wildcats edged the Eagles 65-40. 

  • Okotoks U15 AAA Oilers goaltender Carter Esler was selected in the first round, 22nd overall, by the Spokane Chiefs during the WHL Prospects Draft. 

  • Diamond Valley high school students got a first-hand look at the impacts of drinking and driving. Oilfields School Grade 12 students took part in Operation Prevention, where they watched first responders attend a mock car accident and continue trauma care at the local hospital. The students then heard from first responders and a trauma survivor about their experiences. 

  • Bruce Gerrard, an Okotoks golfer, marked a pair of 1’s on his scorecard in May, recording two holes-in-one during a five-day span on hole No. 5 at Turner Valley Golf Club 

  • RJ Sigurdson (UCP) was re-elected as Highwood MLA with 69 per cent of votes in the May 29 provincial election. The NDP's Jessica Hallam got 29 per cent and Wildrose Independence Party candidate Mike Lorusso garnered two per cent of votes. Livingstone-Macleod was retained by the UCP but Banff-Kananaskis was narrowly won by the NDP. 

  • Okotoks council voted against having an entertainment district downtown that would have allowed alcohol consumption within the district boundaries during community events. The defeated proposal was a watered-down version that originally would have allowed alcohol consumption seven days a week. 

  • John Scott Ranch, in the Longview area, was one of three Alberta filming locations to win a Location of the Year Award at the Global Production Awards in France. 

  • Foothills County resident Cody Snyder was inducted into the Bull Riding Hall of Fame, becoming the first cowboy from north of the 49th parallel to join the distinguished group 

  • A traditional Blackfoot tipi was transferred to Okotoks Mayor Tanya Thorn, on behalf of the Town, as part of its commitment to reconciliation.
