Falcons, Knights continue tournament winning ways

Basketball: Foothills girls, HTA boys take titles in Lethbridge, Calgary

It continues to be a golden December in Okotoks high school basketball.

The Foothills Falcons senior girls and Holy Trinity Academy Knights senior boys racked up their second tournament titles of the month with the Comp earning the Green and Gold championship in Lethbridge and HTA securing the crown at Calgary’s Bishop Carroll during the Dec. 15-16 weekend.

In Lethbridge, the Falcons scored a 94-54 gold medal game victory over St. Mary’s from Saskatchewan.

It was the semifinal Foothills won’t soon forget, with the Falcons erasing a four-point deficit in the final 67 seconds to upend the host L.C.I. Rams by a 76-75 score.

Dior Sellars had two key steals to secure the victory, the second of which set up tournament MVP Savanah Sommerfeldt for the game-winning layup with just 4.6 seconds on the clock.

In the opener, the Comp took it to Centennial by a 67-35 score with Sommerfeldt posting a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

The Falcons boys had a 2-2 record in their trip to Edmonton for the Reb Invitational at Jasper Place.

Foothills defeated Scona 81-68, lost 82-79 to Kelowna, dropped a decision to Western Canada and closed it out by posting an 82-62 win over the All Saints Legends.

The Knights boys won their second consecutive tournament and in convincing fashion.

HTA overpowered the host Bishop Carroll 102-52 in the final with Xavier Krueger scoring 24, Charlie Humphries adding 14, Nico Kotze scoring 11 and Owen Vanin hitting double digits with 10.

In the semifinal, HTA secured an 81-32 win over Our Lady of the Rockies with Lucas Barlow scoring a game-high 24 points and Ben Gutek adding 12.

The Knights’ closest game of the competition was its opener, a 73-54 victory over EP Scarlett.

Barlow and Krueger led the attack with 22 and 21 points, respectively.

Krueger was named tournament MVP, Barlow was a tournament all-star and Grade 10 Bowen Gottselig earned the Hustle Award.
