Alberta’s 55+ athletes had a golden finish at the national games last month.

Fifty-one athletes from the Zone 2 Big Country region contributed 53 medals as Alberta led the nation with 100 gold medals at the Canada 55+ Games in Quebec City.

Okotokian Ernie Robson played a large role in Alberta’s medal haul.

The track and field athlete captured one gold, two silver and one bronze at the event.

Robson, 80, was golden in the shot put, leapt to silver in the triple jump and discus and snared bronze in javelin.

High River’s Norma Dawson, who was also Alberta’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony, won three gold medals, in shot put, 50m and 100m dash, and bronze, in the 200m race.

The Zone 2 region features athletes from Okotoks, Foothills County, High River, Rocky View County, Airdrie, Cochrane, Canmore, Banff, Mountainview and Big Horn counties.

Alberta’s overall medal count of 199 was second only to Ontario’s 211. For gold medals, Alberta’s centennial mark edge Quebec’s total of 843 and Ontario’s 81.

The national event featured 3,900 senior athletes from 10 provinces along with the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
