The early signs are positive at the Cowboys Rangeland Derby.
High River’s Jason Glass earned a second-place finish among the 27 competitors on day one of the Calgary Stampede Cowboys Rangeland Derby chuckwagon races on July 5 at GMC Stadium.
Glass, the 2013 Rangeland Derby champion, finished in 1:11.58, a half second behind Chad Fike and ahead of Rae Croteau Jr. to round out the top-three.
Foothills County’s Dayton Sutherland, making his Rangeland Derby debut as a driver, finished 18th on night one while Blackie’s Jordie Fike was 21st.
The derby rewards consistency with the top-three drivers in the aggregate through to the July 13 round moving through to the championship final heat on July 14.
Races run nightly during the Stampede at 7:45 p.m. at GMC Stadium.
In rodeo action, Millarville bronc rider Layton Green is the lone local competing in A draw from July 5-8. Green finished tied for second on day one with a score of 83.50.
