Okotoks Dawgs in WCBL West Division dogfight

Sylvan Lake and Okotoks in WCBL first-place battle

Top spot in the West Division is up for grabs this week.

The Okotoks Dawgs (26-6) and Sylvan Lake Gulls (27-7) are locked in a first place battle with three matchups this week as the race for top spot in the Western Canadian Baseball League’s six-team West Division heats up.

The Gulls have surged up the standings with 11 straight wins with the Dawgs taking eight of their last 10 contests.

Okotoks was feeling Bullish on Sunday with its first victory in four tries in Lethbridge. Nash Crowell crushed a three-run home run and had four hits as Okotoks saw off a late comeback bid to edge the Bulls 9-8.

Lethbridge has had the edge in the season series by a 4-2 count.

Earlier in the week, the Dawgs overpowered the Edmonton Prospects four times in a five-game series featuring a pair of double-headers.

On Saturday, the Prospects rallied for a 5-4 extra-innings walk off win, a home game for Edmonton held at Seaman Stadium.

In the back end of the double-header, Okotoks rebounded with a 6-2 victory. Tucker Zdunich paced the attack with his fourth home run of the season along with a game-high three hits and three RBI. Greg Ross earned his first win, allowing just one run on three hits through five innings.

This week, the Dawgs are in Brooks on July 9, travel to Sylvan Lake on July 10 and return home for two more versus the Gulls on July 11-12. The July 11 game is Mascot Mania at Seaman Stadium with Diggity Dawg joined by some of his entertaining peers.

Okotoks then holds its inaugural Teddy Bear Toss as part of the July 13 home date versus the Bombers. Fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears to the game to be tossed during the fifth inning, with some also available for purchase on the concourse.
