Christmas came early for the Okotoks Mavericks last weekend.
The Okotoks swim club had a pair of sterling performances in the pool on two fronts with competitions in Edmonton and Calgary putting a bow on its pre-holiday swim schedule.
In the capital, the Mavericks made waves at the JP Fiset Invitational with a trio of club records broken, three medals won and a number of qualification standard swims achieved.
Lucy Wiens broke her own record in the 15 and over category as well as the overall club record in the 50m backstroke. The 16-year-old stopped the clock at 28.78 in the sprint.
Wiens added a third record at the meet, with a time of 2:19.18 in the 200m backstroke to knock off a club benchmark that stood for eight years.
The 50m backstroke won her gold at the event, adding silver in the 100m backstroke, with Canadian Open qualification standards met in both medal performances.
Gibson Hurd, 15, earned the other podium finish in Edmonton with silver in the 50m butterfly.
Jenna Willey, Peyton Jones, Slade Diakiw, Carson Vollman, Gibson Hurd, Declan Harrison and Mikayla Paul all earned top-eight finishes with 10 members of the club touching the wall for top-16 placements.
Fifteen members of the club earned provincial qualification standard swims at the invitational with an additional 12 posting championship qualification standards.
Closer to home, the Mavericks thrived at the University of Calgary Swim Club’s Holiday Classic.
Okotoks swimmers produced eight medals and a pair of qualification standards.
Simon Freeland won silver in 50m backstroke as did Brynna Hurd in 100m backstroke.
Blakley Dah (50m butterfly), Pia Giuffre (100m individual medley), Claire Macdonald (100m backstroke), Lauren Macdonald (100m freestyle, 100m backstroke) and Landyn Meikle (50m breaststroke) all posted bronze medal performances.
