20th annual rodeo is in the books

The Labour Day weekend was the 20th annual Okotoks Pro Rodeo. I remember well the first one. Verge Reidlinger and Jim Braun were co-chairmen and worked hard getting the event off to a great start.

The Labour Day weekend was the 20th annual Okotoks Pro Rodeo. I remember well the first one. Verge Reidlinger and Jim Braun were co-chairmen and worked hard getting the event off to a great start. The rodeo has always attracted good crowds and the rodeo dance has always been the difference between making a few bucks or not. Believe me, no one gets rich putting on this rodeo. Follow one of the volunteers around before, after, or during the rodeo and you would have to ask yourself “Why would anyone put themselves through that?” I can only think it is for the love of the sport. Anyway, congratulations to all the volunteers on another great rodeo. We are fortunate to have the a group of volunteers who year after year provide us with this great entertainment.

Also congratulations to the 2011-2012 Miss Rodeo Okotoks Nicole Schlaak. We hope you enjoy your year representing Okotoks across the country. Thanks to last year’s Queen, Kenna Lockwood, for an outstanding job above and beyond I might add.

The weather has definitely taken a turn for the best and they are predicting a couple months of great fall weather. Certainly helped out the Sheep River Road Race on Monday with about 300 participants.

That was not a typo last week. Okotoks council did take a salary cut so that their annual salaries are in line with other communities around the same size. Sort of bucks the trend as most councils increase their salaries in the first year or so and then make a move like this closer to election day! The five per cent decrease was taken out of meeting fees. Would it not be a more accurate compensation if the councillors and the mayor were paid a per meeting fee? I know some councillors attend way more extra meetings than others but all are paid the same. More bookkeeping, but a clearer picture and more fair way of compensation.

Did you happen to be downtown on Saturday? Wow, there was lots going on and the streets were full of families. I think events like this are what Okotoks is all about. It always puts a smile on my face to see the people enjoying the flavour of the events downtown.

OK even though all the talk is about the plus 25 degree days we all know that eventually winter will arrive. On that note is this the year you take up curling? Registration will be held on Monday, September 12th from 7-8:30pm at the rink. Not sure you are good enough? Then sign up for the curling clinics on October 1, 8, and 15th. They say an active body is a happy body!
