LETTER: Different attitude toward deer in Okanagan

Former Okotokian is happy to have Okotoks send its deer to his new home in Penticton.

Deer are a frequent sight on the pathways in Sheep River Park.

Dear Editor,

After living in Okotoks for 27 years, my wife and I are now retired in Penticton for the last three years.

I like to keep up to date by reading the Western Wheel online. I have noticed recently that the deer controversy is still alive and well in Okotoks.

One thing that surprised us upon moving to Penticton is that we have encountered more deer here than we ever did in Okotoks. Penticton and Okotoks are comparable in population, and yet in three years of living here, I have not noticed any public opposition in the media. The people here have a different mindset.

Every day we thank God for the blessings of his creation, for the two lakes that border our city, for the mountains, hills and valleys that surround us, for the orchards, vineyards and, yes, even the deer.

We remember with fondness walking the pathways along the Sheep River. These are lasting memories. I would encourage you to embrace the things that make Okotoks unique, and resist pressure to turn Okotoks into just an extension of the concrete jungle of Calgary.

For those of you that are determined to get rid of your deer, I respectfully have a solution. Send us your deer. You will be happy, we will continue to be happy and somehow I think even the deer will be happy.
