LETTER: Political rhetoric not reason for change

An elected politician needs to demonstrate conduct fitting of a representative of the people of Canada.

Dear Editor,

Recent op-eds posted in the Western Wheel regarding political rhetoric and the leadership or lack of in our federal government are missing the mark, in my opinion.

Whether the people of Canada support the Justin Trudeau minority government or not, or whether a change in government is due or not, the political rhetoric on the issue seems unworthy of change.

The country needs leadership that fits the role and definition of a statesman or states person, a bedrock of principles, a vision for the country, courage to defend those principles and a moral ground.

An elected politician needs to demonstrate conduct fitting of a representative of the people of Canada and qualify to form a government to lead a country like Canada.

The conduct of our elected members in Ottawa today, as recently demonstrated in the house, is not leadership and certainly does not fit an alternative to selecting the next government.

The people of Canada only need to look at the Brian Mulroney (former Conservative Prime Minister) introduction to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the Atlantic Economic Forum on June 19, 2023: "I have learned over the years that history is unconcerned with the trivia and the trash of rumours and gossip floating around Parliament Hill. History is only concerned with the big ticket items that have shaped the future of Canada."

Calling an election at this time needs to be worthy of change... not just change for change's sake.
