The Town of Canmore should take a “carrot” approach rather than their current use of a “stick”. They need only look up the road to Banff to see how effectively an incentive approach can help solve the housing affordability problem (see link). In Banff, simple land use zoning changes have triggered a market in providing affordable housing at a number of scales. Banff has seen a five-fold increase in applications to construct new ADU’s since making simple changes, as well larger multi family development applications.
I’m the owner of a second home in Canmore as well as an architect and licensed builder. The current rules for ADU’s make constructing a liveable one extremely challenging. A few simple changes would make for much more livable housing for those who need it and allow us to be part of an affordability solution rather than be treated as a cause of the problem.

As long as the Trump regime talks about making Canada the 51st state it does not make sense to have a fighter jet with advanced systems that can be shut off with the flip of a switch, or grounded because the US decides to stop shipping parts. The mayor misses (or ignores) the real issue: a hostile America can could drastically reduce our readiness to defend ourselves. We should buy our planes from an ally not an adversary.
