Discover Artist Avenue: Where Dance and Music Converge

Creativity knows no bounds. That is the thinking behind Sarah Moore’s revolutionary studio, Artist Avenue. It’s Okotoks home of hip hop where aspiring dancers learn fundamentals from breaking to krumping.

However, more than a place to learn dance, Artist Avenue fills the gaps in the industry by including services and classes for aspiring DJs, freestylers, videographers, and so much more.

While Okotoks is not currently known as a major cultural centre for hip hop, Sarah assures that there is a very good reason for her studio’s hip hop focus.

“It is growing in popularity across North America and across the dance world,” she says, as evidenced by the number of contestants on shows like Just Dance and America’s Got Talent. “However, most studios only offer one or two hours of basic hip hop a week. There are so many styles! Breaking. Krumping. Shuffle. House. Popping and locking… You could do 10 hours a week in one area and just be scratching the surface! We offer lessons on the fundamentals with the ability to branch off into one of the many nuanced aspects of hip hop.”

Her team of 10 instructors each specialize in a style of hip hop, ensuring an immersive experience for every student. But it doesn’t stop there! Freestyle Fridays offer a four week rotational program culminating in live dance battles on the final week. Students can take part or observe, all while enjoying a safe and welcoming space among like-minded peers.

"Creating Artist Avenue is something I have always dreamed about," says Sarah Moore, Founder, Owner, and Creative Director of Artist Avenue. "I have been dancing since I was a child, and seeing this vision come to life is truly fulfilling."

She is no stranger to the world of high-energy performance and dance. Watching her famous father perform on the Las Vegas strip provided Sarah with all of the inspiration she needed to imagine connecting people to their innermost being through the expression of dance and music.

One of the unique aspects of Artist Avenue is its integration of vocals and DJ performances into the dance experience. This innovative approach addresses a significant disconnect in the dance industry, where music and dance often operate in silos. To further enhance the experience, Artist Avenue incorporates videography to explore how music and dance can contribute to whole-body wellness. This visual storytelling not only documents the artistic journey but also highlights the profound impact of integrating these creative practices into daily life.

"You need music to dance! Bringing them together is my passion and dream," Sarah shares. "For the first time, we have created a space where artists can be inspired by all different avenues."

Artist Avenue is not just about dance; it also focuses on personal growth and healing through movement. The studio offers a six-week Adult Empowerment Series, guided by a dance teacher who is also a certified dance therapist. This series encompasses various themes such as grief and trauma, allowing participants to connect deeply with themselves.

"In this empowerment series, you actually connect and go within to really find who you are," explains Sarah. "Movement is such a big part of who you are as a person. Trauma is stored in different parts of the body, and we explore what that looks like through the heart."

Another special program is Pave the Path. This empowers those interested in professional dance to learn the ins and outs of the industry. From learning how to dance on camera to how to market one’s self in this competitive world, Pave the Path is a must for anyone looking to delve deeply into this career.

So, what if you enjoy movement and exercise but are not a dancer? Artist Avenue’s all ages semester classes ensure you are still included. Enjoy Pilates, yoga, strength and conditioning training, or calisthenics. No experience is needed to move your body in these fun, beneficial, healthy ways. The group classes also offer a social way to meet like-minded people in pursuit of their own healthy living goals.
