A proposed cell tower in the centre of Diamond Valley is not going ahead after strong community opposition.
Shared Tower Inc., the company involved with a proposal to build a 35-metre-tall cell tower in the heart of Turner Valley, is no longer considering putting a tower on the site, the Town of Diamond Valley said in a release on March 24.
The Town said the company changed its plans after public opposition against building a tower at the location, near Main Street and Sunset Boulevard.
Shared Tower Inc. and the Town will work to find another site for the project that aligns with a new policy adopted by Diamond Valley council on March 19.
The new Telecommunications Antenna System Siting Protocol allows the Town to have some influence over the location and design of antenna systems, the Town said.
Telecommunications towers are approved or denied by Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), but new applications are expected to consider local input and to accommodate reasonable requests where technically and commercially viable, the Town said.
The new policy allows for public information sessions unless a project is exempt from consultation requirements.
Earlier in March, officials in Diamond Valley said they opposed the first proposal and urged residents in the southern Alberta community to speak out against plans to build the cell tower in the heart of the town.
Town staff told councillors that the tower looked out of place in drawings, despite staff efforts to disguise it, and that it would alter the area’s character.
