UPDATE: Fire breaks out at Foothills landfill

Smoke was visible from a highway south of Okotoks after a fire broke out at the Foothills Regional Landfill on Aug. 22.

The fire was reported at approximately 3:15 p.m. within the landfill on Highway 783, and was initially thought to be a large fire.

The Foothills Fire Department, Okotoks Fire & Rescue and the High River Fire Department responded.

Firefighters said it took two to three hours to extinguish the blaze that was burning over an area of about 100' by 100'.

The fire appeared to be on the landfill's southern boundary, and landfill operations didn't appear to be impacted.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
