The East Coast is coming to the Foothills.

The Once, a folk trio based in Newfoundland and Labrador, is bringing traditional folk and country to Beneath the Arch, Diamond Valley's non-profit concert series, this weekend.

The group hails from Trinity, N.L. and has been creating "contemporary vibes" for the last two decades, according to vocalist Geraldine Hollett.

"Even though it's East Coast-based music, the stories are very relatable for fishermen and farmers, or just for people who like to be in a space and feel all feelings," said Hollett, who will take the stage alongside fellow band members Andrew Dale and Phil Churchill.

The Once's work has been recognized with Juno nominations for the Roots & Traditional Album of the Year - Group in 2012 and 2015, for albums Row Upon Row of the People They Know and Departures, respectively.

The band has also taken home three Canadian Folk Music Awards and was named Artist of the Year by the Newfoundland & Labrador Arts Council in 2013.

The Diamond Valley show is part of a tour across Western Canada celebrating the release of Out Here, the trio's latest album.

"We'll do some covers just to keep people interested, but we've been doing this for a long time, so we have a lot of original material," said Hollett, adding that concertgoers can expect plenty of laughs during the show.

"We're a little bit foolish by nature," she joked.

The show will be held at the Flare n' Derrick Community Hall on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.mTickets can be purchased online here or in-person at the Bluerock Gallery and Sheep River Library.

Beneath the Arch presents seven shows annually, and revenue goes towards initiatives such as the young performing artists' bursary

The next instalment in the monthly concert series will feature The Andrew Collins Trio, an award-winning, multi-genre band playing folk, jazz, roots, classical and bluegrass, on Saturday, Nov. 30. The full concert lineup is available here.
