Okotoks is looking for an artist in residence.

Following a successful inaugural year in 2023, the Sheep River Artist in Residence Program is set to return for 2024. Scheduled to coincide with Alberta Culture Days and Month of the Artist in Okotoks, this residency program will run for four weeks during September.

The program invites artists from all disciplines to apply for the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant community of Okotoks. Funded by the Okotoks Arts Council and produced in partnership with the Okotoks Public Library and the Town of Okotoks, the residency aims to foster the creativity of both established and emerging Alberta artists, while enriching the local community with their artistic expressions.

"The OAC is thrilled to once again participate in the Sheep River Artist in Residence Program,” said Neil Bantleman, vice president of the Okotoks Arts Council. “After the incredible success of the inaugural year, we are excited to see where this year's selected artist will take the program.”

The selected artist will be tasked with creating a proposed body of work that they will present to the community. The residency will culminate in a closing reception at the Rotary Performing Arts Centre on Sept. 28, where the artist will showcase the art created during their stay.

Artists interested in applying for the 2024 Sheep River Artist in Residence Program are encouraged to visit okotoks.ca/artist-in-residence for details and submission guidelines.

Online applications will be available to artists until April 24. The selected artist will be decided by a jury consisting of members of the Okotoks Arts Council, Okotoks Public Library and Okotoks Culture and Heritage in May.

Tanya Zakarow, Okotoks' inaugural artist in residence, painted portraits of several prominent citizens during her residency last September.
