Family of moose on the loose in Okotoks

Four moose – a bull, a cow and two calves – were spotted on the northeastern edge of town.

Four moose were spotted on the outskirts of Okotoks on Jan. 22 and 23.

The animals were first reported to be there by Okotoks resident Nicole Vanderdeen on Jan. 22, and were then reported by Curtis Swain to have returned to the area the next day.

Moose are typically solitary, though these four — a young bull, cow and two calves — were likely a family unit.

As Okotoks is located in a wildlife corridor that many animals may enter as they make their way along the Sheep River Valley, moose sightings are known to occur, though they are uncommon.

Numerous onlookers stopped along the road to take photos of the animals.

Always exercise caution around moose. Remain in the vehicle at all times and be vigilant if they are near the road.
