The Friends of Foothills Schools Foundation has not only funded its first three projects, but it also has a major fundraiser in the works.
The foundation, which operates at arms-length from the Foothills School Division in order to address gaps not covered by provincial funding, started ramping up efforts earlier this year after receiving its charitable status.
President Larry Albrecht and executive director Marica Borovich-Law announced on Dec. 16 that funds raised at a summer golf tournament allowed the foundation to request grant proposals up to $3,000.
Board members reviewed the nine applications received and provided funding to the following projects:
• École Okotoks Junior High School – to support the purchase of a Shapeoko Pro CNC Router for their woodshop.
• École Senator Riley Middle School – to support the purchase of tower gardening supplies and to support the purchase of a cold food serving bar.
• École Secondaire Highwood High School – to support the purchase of replacement components of the theatre lighting control system.
“The foundation board was impressed with the quality and quantity of student focused projects,” the announcement stated. “Although we are not able to support all of them, we remain very motivated to continue to raise funds and collaborate with Foothills School Division’s schools and school councils to enhance student learning.”
The foundation has a pair of fundraising events on its 2025 calendar, including the Heart of Education Gala on Feb. 7 that will feature a performance by George Canyon and a four-course gourmet meal. The second annual Fore Education Golf Tournament is slated for June.
