Ceremony held in Okotoks to recognize historic importance of First World War battle

The Okotoks Legion took time Sunday to remember a defining moment for Canada.

Okotoks Legion Branch 291 held a ceremony commemorating the First World War's Battle of Vimy Ridge on April 6 in front of the Okotoks Recreation Centre.

The ceremony featured veterans, cadets, politicians, the colour guard and a brief history of the importance of the 1917 battle.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge saw all four divisions of the Canadian corps fight together for the first time and capture a heavily fortified and strategically important ridge in northern France from April 9-12, 1917. There were over 10,000 casualties to Canadian soldiers from the battle with 3,598 killed and 7,000 wounded in the fighting.

Vimy Ridge Day is commemorated annually in Canada on April 9.

The Town of Okotoks is holding a Veterans Wall Guided Tour on Wednesday, April 9 at 11 a.m. at the Salute to our Veterans Wall on Veterans Way. Led by Kathy Coutts from the Okotoks Museum and Archives, the tour will include information on the brave men from the Okotoks district who fought at Vimy Ridge.
