An Okotoks non-profit's latest project is all about grads.
MyCityCare wants students graduating from high school to be confident on their special day. The organization is hosting the Cinderella Project & Tux Shop, a one-day pop-up event to provide formal attire and more for grads who need a helping hand.
“Grad is a once-in-a-lifetime event,” said Lorna Jewer, director of MyCityCare Okotoks.
Families of kids in Grade 12 shouldn't have to choose between everyday necessities or going to grad, Jewer said.
“(These grads) worked hard through their school careers, and they deserve to be celebrated,” she said.
The pop-up will be held on April 13 and students can register online.
Jewer said the project is near and dear to her heart, with about 20 grads from the Foothills kitted out each year for the big day.
“We'll have grads come to our location, and they get a pre booked time that they can shop for their dress or their suit," Jewer said. "We will have makeup and accessories, shoes, whatever a grad needs.”
MyCityCare accepts clothing donations year-round but is putting out a special call for grad-related items to help make the event a success.
“Not only the suits, the dresses, the shirts and ties, but we’re also looking for donations that we can put into gift bags,” Jewer said.
Formal wear or accessories can be dropped off at Foothills Cleaners on Riverside Drive in Okotoks, and Jewer said anything dropped off before April 8 will go towards this year’s project.
MyCityCare is also looking for donations of photography mini-sessions or hair salon time.
“When the grads come in, we can give them these gift cards and they can go book to get their hair done or go get photos done,” she said.
