The sign has come down at Safeway's previous location on Big Rock Lane in Okotoks.

A new grocery brand will be setting up shop in Okotoks.

A spokesperson for Sobeys confirmed that the building Safeway vacated last month on Big Rock Lane will be converted to a FreshCo and is expected to open next spring.

The FreshCo banner is owned by Sobeys and is the grocery store operator’s discount brand.

The change comes after Safeway opened a 48,000-square-foot store in D'Arcy Crossing at the north end of Okotoks.

Safeway closed the Big Rock Lane location on July 19, and the grocer held a grand opening for its new location the following day.

According to its website, FreshCo operates more than 140 stores across five provinces.

Sobeys Inc. owns the FreshCo and Safeway brands, as well as several other names in the grocery industry.
