A blessing by a Métis knowledge keeper and a presentation by a Métis scholar will help the Town of Okotoks mark Métis Week and Louis Riel Day.

Louis Riel Day, on Nov. 16, falls during Métis Week, which this year is from Nov. 12 to 18.

The Town of Okotoks says the week is dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the Métis people and their culture, history and achievements.

The Métis emerged as a distinct people in the 18th century and have their own culture, language and sociopolitical practices. Today, they play an important role in the founding and development of our social, cultural and political landscape, the Town said.

During Métis Week, the Town will honour Louis Riel Day with an event on Nov. 16 at the Rotary Performing Arts Centre from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

There will be a blessing by IIa Vivier, a Métis knowledge keeper, a demonstration of Métis jigging and remarks from Amber Boyd, the district captain of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government (OMG) of the Métis Nation within Alberta Rocky View District #4, and Okotoks town council.

Also on Nov. 16, a presentation will be held at the Okotoks Public Library from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Reagan Markwell, a Métis scholar, will discuss the intent of Métis Week and the importance of Louis Riel Day.

The event is free to attend, but registration is required due to limited seating at the library.

The Town said Métis Week recognizes the sacrifices of the Métis as they continue to strive towards achieving rights and recognition as a distinct nation, while also celebrating their accomplishments and contributions.

The Métis Nation flag will be raised at the Okotoks Municipal Centre on Nov. 12 to mark the beginning of Métis Week in Canada, and it will remain raised until Nov. 18.

The Municipal Centre building lights will be illuminated in blue.
