New homes stand in an area of Wedderburn in Okotoks on Aug. 30. The Town recently approved a new planning document to extend the community further east towards 32 Street.

Plans to extend Wedderburn further to the east have been approved by Okotoks council.

A new North Okotoks Area Structure Plan (ASP) was endorsed by councillors during their last meeting in August.

The original ASP was approved in 2016 and enabled the development of Wedderburn. Since then, the Town annexed land from Foothills County and adopted policies for more compact and sustainable development.

The newly approved plan adds about 160 acres, doubling the size of the area to 320 acres and extending it east to 32 Street.

The additional land is expected to be primarily used for single-family and semi-detached residential, with some mixed-use retail and multi-unit housing. The new plan also addresses the updated development policies.

A public hearing for the project was held in May, and the plan was approved by the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board in July.
