Painted by Calgary artist Kim Parrent, the 30 inch oil-on-canvas painting depicts Okotoks legend Jim ‘Bearcat’ Murray and fellow Flames alumnus Lanny McDonald holding images of them celebrating their 1989 Stanley Cup win. It was entered into the Educational Partnership Foundation's 20th Annual Legends for Learners Charity Auction, where it sold for $4,000.
The artist was introduced to the hockey duo by a longtime friend of Murray.
“They were looking for some Flames alumni to represent the charity, and Rob Laird put me in touch with Bearcat and Lanny,” Parrent said. “And these guys are such great role models.”
The work was bought by Okotoks resident Jim Braun.
“I’ve been a lifelong fan of Lanny McDonald and Bearcat Murray,” Braun said. “Bearcat has always been a part of the town and him and I just all of a sudden linked up and became good friends.
“It’s just an iconic piece of memorabilia from both of them right there.”
The good cause was no small influence in Braun’s choice.
“I support anything Bearcat or any of them are involved in, especially with helping the kids,” he said. “There’s so much trouble in the world and when it comes to the kids I support them all the way.”
McDonald had jumped at the opportunity to help out for cause and hang out with his old friend.
“First of all it was fun having the picture made with Bearcat,” McDonald said. “The lady that did the painting is awesome in how she portrayed the two of us, and then thirdly and most importantly is to be able to do something for such a great cause.
“And then to come back out here and hang out with all of Bearcats friends, yeah it’s been a great time.”
