The contributions of late Okotoks Mayor Bill Robertson will be recognized and celebrated next week.
A ceremony in his honour is set for Saturday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m., at which time the former Riverside Community Park at 1400 North Railway St. will officially be renamed Bill Robertson Park. Okotokians are encouraged to attend to commemorate Robertson's outstanding contributions to the town during a political career that spanned 25 years.
Okotoks council and the Robertson family will be in attendance and Mayor Tanya Thorn is expected to make some remarks during the event.
Following the ceremony, there will be children's activities, refreshments and camaraderie, according to the Town.
Robertson was first elected to council in 1995 and served five terms as a councillor before moving to the mayor's chair in 2010. He was a tireless advocate for the community and contributed greatly to the success of Okotoks and the region over the years.
He passed away in July last year following a battle with cancer.
"His leadership, warmth, respect and compassion were felt by all who had the opportunity to interact with him," the Town said in a statement. "He is greatly missed by many of us in the community."
Parking onsite is reserved for family members and those with mobility issues. Public parking will be available at Seaman Stadium, across the street from the park.
