Salvation Army needs Christmas kettle volunteers in Okotoks

Christmas Kettle Campaign is looking to raise $125,000 to support the growing needs in the Foothills region.

The Salvation Army Foothills is gearing up for its annual Christmas Kettle Campaign in Okotoks, running from Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. to Dec. 24 at 2 p.m.

This year, with five kettle locations across the town, the need for volunteers is greater than ever.

“We’re excited to kick off another season of giving, but we can’t do it without the incredible support of our community,” said volunteer coordinator Angela Grey Burdick. “Last year, Okotokians helped us raise $136,600, exceeding our target. This year, we aim to reach $125,000 again to support growing needs in the Foothills region.”

The kettles will be stationed at Walmart (two entrances), Costco, Sobeys, Save-On-Foods and No Frills. Volunteers are needed to cover two-hour shifts from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Burdick emphasized that anyone can help, and minors are welcome to participate if accompanied by an adult.

In a festive highlight, the Salvation Army Brass Band, featuring "Dave Clark 5 and Bad Math," will perform at Walmart on Dec. 14 from noon to 2 p.m., bringing holiday cheer and drawing attention to this vital fundraiser.

Every dollar donated stays in the Foothills, funding essential programs like the food bank, Christmas hamper program, community dinners, youth summer camps and provision of essential items.

Last year, 1,015 children received Christmas toys, treats and necessities though Salvation Army Christmas Foothills’ hamper program, 19 kids attended summer camp and hundreds of community dinners were served.

The need for these services has grown significantly in 2024. The food bank alone has seen a 44 per cent increase in new clients, with overall demand for essential services rising by 32 per cent.

“We know times are tough for many Canadians, but even a couple of hours volunteering or a small donation can make a big difference,” Burdick said.
