The TC Energy Saddlebrook Solar and Storage facility along Highway 2A, near Aldersyde, in Foothills County on Aug. 31. Phase one of the project, with up to 81 MW of power generation, should be fully online in December.

A solar farm in Foothills County that will provide enough electricity to power thousands of homes is being powered up and is expected to be fully in service next month.

The first phase of TC Energy’s Saddlebrook Solar + Storage project, located on Highway 2A north of High River, near the hamlet of Aldersyde, will generate up to 81 megawatts of power for Alberta's electricity market, enough to power approximately 20,000 homes, according to information on the project website.

It is expected to be fully operational in December, TC Energy said in a statement.

The second phase, a utility-scale storage facility with a capacity of up to 6.5-megawatts, is expected to be complete by the end of 2024.

This story was updated on Nov. 24 to reflect that power generated will supply Alberta's electricity market.
