Firehouse Subs opened its first location in Alberta today at the D’Arcy Crossing shopping centre in Okotoks.
The new restaurant is one of several slated to open later this year as the brand expands into Western Canada.
The Okotoks location is owned and operated by Cody Gosling, who has a long history with some of Canada’s most iconic quick-service brands, and business partner Mitch Turgeon.
Gosling’s mother owned two Tim Hortons locations, the first in 1987 before acquiring a second in 1991, with Gosling joining the business as an owner in 2007, growing their enterprise to a total of nine locations.
“We are thrilled to join the Firehouse Subs family and bring our hot and hearty subs and philanthropic mission to the Okotoks community,” said Gosling. “We can’t wait to meet new guests and support local first responders through the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada.”
Founded in 1994 by two brothers and former firefighters, Firehouse Subs expanded into Canada in 2015 with its first restaurant in Oshawa. Today, there are more than 60 restaurants across Ontario.
Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada has granted more than $3.2 million to first responders and public safety organizations in Canada.
Guests can support the foundation by rounding up to the nearest dollar, purchasing a recycled, re, five-gallon pickle bucket or dropping spare change into the donation canister by the cash register.
The restaurant décor reflects the founding family’s decades of fire and police service with gear and photos donated by local fire departments. For each new Firehouse Subs location, a custom mural is commissioned and hand-painted by chief mural officer Joe Puskas.
Every mural is unique to its community and restaurant, with the one in Okotoks depicting a local fire truck, two firefighters and the iconic Okotoks Erratic 'Big Rock' in the background.
